Synopsis[]

Jester - Chapter 1 001

You can always count on the Jester to have a few tricks up his sleeve.

The hour is late on Halloween night. A few scant trick or treaters are still parading in the street. A young unidentified man walks away from his place of employment after finishing a work shift. On the sidewalk, he spots a tall, thin individual wearing a creepy Jester mask and an orange suit. The jester is casually leaning against a street light while holding a cane. As the man approaches, the jester springs to life, tipping his top hat as a friendly gesture.

Remaining silent, he then performs a routine magic trick, seemingly pulling a piece of candy from the man's ear and giving it to him. Afterward, he tries to engage with the man with a card trick. The man pulls a card from the deck while the jester shields his eyes. It is the Ace of Diamonds. The jester shuffles the deck then gestures for the man to place his card in the middle. He shuffles the deck again and indicates that the man should select the card from the top. It is the Ace of Diamonds again. The man is only mildly impressed, but feels wildly uncomfortable. He goes to hand the card back to the jester, who snaps it out of his head.

The silent harlequin then produces a knife from within his coat and uses it to slice his own arm open. He takes the man's card and smears it across the bloody knife wound then places it back inside the deck. He taps the man on the chest and the bloody card magically appears from his shirt pocket. The man is freaked out now and drops the card as he begins to back away.

The jester bows then suddenly appears behind the man - as if by magic. The man begins to run away and takes off across the street, but trips in the middle of the road, landing flat on his face. Looking down, he discovers that his shoelaces have been tied together. He scrambles to get up then hears a whistle. Looking back towards the sidewalk, he sees the jester staring at him. A car suddenly appears out of nowhere and strikes the man. The driver does not seem overly concerned and mildly asks the man, "Are you all right?" The man looks about the area, scanning for the jester, but when he turns back towards the vehicle, he sees that the jester has replaced the driver.

The man manages to shamble back towards the sidewalk. When he emerges from an alley, the jester is there to trip him up with his cane. As the man rolls over, he now finds that his hands have been cuffed together. The man starts grunting as he struggles to break free of the cuffs. The jester produces an opaque plastic Halloween mask and places it over the man's head. He then gathers up a magician's cloak and covers the man with it. He walks around him then quickly snatches the cloak away. The man is gone. Satisfied with his accomplishment, the jester straightens his tie and walks down the sidewalk in search of someone else to impress with his antics.
