Biography[]
Jessie Connelly was an elderly man who lived in the Florida Everglades. He was the father of David Connelly and a former employee of Edward Hart, whom he held great resentment for due to the man's wealth and power. Jessie's son worked as a laborer at one of Edward Hart's orange groves. Jessie himself worked at, or hung about an old gas station and owned a dog.
David Connelly fell in love with Edward Hart's daughter, Elizabeth. This made neither side of the family very happy, so David and Elizabeth eloped. Elizabeth became pregnant with David's child, but they did not wish to raise their baby in their current environment, so they left town.
Edward Hart and his wife Jane got into their truck and went searching for them, stopping at Jessie's gas station. Jessie had no interest in doing anything that might ease Edward's mind, but he didn't like the thought of his grandchild possibly being born in a hostile environment. Jessie joined in the Harts in their truck as they searched for the young newlyweds.
They came upon David's car broken down on the side of the road. A short distance away was a small wooden cabin that they thought the kids might have gone to. When they entered however, they found David and Elizabeth dead on the floor. They had unknowingly drank from poisoned well water, which spelled their doom. Jessie's observed that Elizabeth had recently given birth, but they could find no evidence of the baby.
After spotting a shattered window and green slime on the floor, they took to the swamps. The legendary monster known as the Man-Thing had empathically felt the baby's fear and took it away. The child felt a sense of calm in the Man-Thing's grasp, and his sense of fear went away; which was fortunate for the infant, for the presence of fear would trigger the Man-Thing's burning touch.
The three found the Man-Thing holding the infant in its arms. Jane rushed at it and fired her shotgun, but this proved ineffective. A second shot backfired on her, and blew her own face off. Edward Hart felt massive terror, which prompted the Man-Thing to kill him with his burning touch.
Jessie Connelly however, had no fear of his life ending. The only thing he cared about was saving his granddaughter. He approached the Man-Thing with pleading eyes, who in turn, handed him the child. Jessie took his granddaughter out of the swamps to safety.
