Mastermind is the code name of several fictional supervillains who appear in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The most well-known among them is the original Mastermind, Jason Wyngarde. The character was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby and first appeared in Uncanny X-Men, Volume 1 #4, cover-dated March, 1964.

Overview[]

Mastermind was an evil mutant gifted with the ability to cast illusions inside the minds of other people. He was a member of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and later became an ally of the Hellfire Club. Mastermind took a direct interest in X-Men telepath Jean Grey and brainwashed her into becoming the Hellfire Club's Black Queen. Unfortunately, this also led to Jean becoming the powerful Dark Phoenix who used her telepathy to render Mastermind catatonic. Mastermind eventually recovered and continued to plague the X-Men on several more instances. Ultimately however, he contracted the fatal Legacy virus and died shortly thereafter.

Biography[]

Powers[]

  • Illusion casting: Mastermind has the ability to generate elaborate illusions inside the minds of other people. This effect is mutagenic in nature and operates on a psionic level, manipulating a target's brainwaves so that it experiences different perceptions of all five senses. Even gifted telepaths would have difficulty seeing past the illusion.

Equipment[]

  • Mindtap device: Mastermind secretly lobbied to replace Sebastian Shaw as the Black King of the Hellfire Club. To this end, he used the mindtap device to augment his already-impressive illusion-casting abilities in order to brainwash the X-Men's telepath, Jean Grey. What Mastermind didn't realize however, was that the woman whom he thought was Jean Grey was in reality a cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force. The Phoenix Force had assumed Jean's identity and served on the team for several weeks under the code name Phoenix.
