The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) is an actual military organization and is one of three main branches of the Japan Self-Defense Force. The JGSDF represents the country's Army and was created on July 1st, 1954. Headquartered out of Ichigaya, the JGSDF's primary initiative is to maintain internal security within the nation of Japan.

History[]

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force plays a heavy role in any film that involves the Japanese military. They have maintained a consistent presence in many of the daikaiju ("giant monster") films over the years, beginning with 1954's Gojira, and extending through the entire Godzilla film series. In Gojira, the JGSDF were presented defending the island of Honshu from the reptilian monster known as Gojira. Using conventional weaponry, they attempted to repel the invader, but these methods proved ineffective against Gojira's atomic breath weapon. They even attempted to electrocute Gojira by erecting a giant barbed wire fence around the perimeter of the island, but this too proved ineffectual. With subsequent attacks from both Godzilla as well as other kaiju, the JGSDF upgraded and expanded their methods of operation.

In later years, the Japanese Xenomorph Self-Defense Force was developed as an adjunct of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. It was created with the express purpose of combating adversaries of an extreme and overpowering alien nature, such as kaiju. To this end, the JXSDF initiated the Mecha-G Project, which used the bones of the original Godzilla as the structural lattice behind the creation of their own robotic mecha named Kiryu, or MechaGodzilla.
