Biography[]

1941[]

As part of a special top secret agenda, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes was assigned to serve as a mascot at Camp Lehigh, New Jersey as special support for undercover special agent Steve Rogers, aka, Captain America. Through his various resources, Bucky established himself as someone with connections, who could acquire just about anything anybody would need ranging from cheap cigarettes to access to uncharted flight plans. [1]

In November, 1941, Bucky pretended to "accidentally discover" Steve's secret identity when he walked into Rogers' tent while he was changing into his Captain America costume. Cap was preparing to go to Paris, France to rescue Colonel James Fletcher who had been abducted by the Red Skull’s Death Squad. Bucky finagled his way into the mission and accompanied Cap as well as U.S. Army lieutenant Cynthia Glass to Paris. Bucky helped the French resistance fight against Nazi soldiers, but was ultimately captured when Glass revealed herself as a Nazi spy code named Agent X. [2]

Cap and Bucky were taken back to Berlin, Germany where they were placed inside of a prison camp. Using a stolen paperclip as a lock pick, Bucky escaped from his cell and freed many of the other prisoners at the camp. He reunited with Cap, who had been brought out to face the Red Skull, and together they escaped Berlin. [3]
