The Island of Doctor Moreau is a novel of the science fiction genre. It was written by H.G. Wells and published by Heinemann in 1896. The premise of the book involves a castaway named Edward Prendick who finds himself shipwrecked on an island in the South Pacific. He encounters a scientist named Doctor Moreau, who has used his great intellect to cultivate a colony of Beast Men. The novel has been adapted into various media several times beginning with the 1932 film Island of Lost Souls, directed by Erle C. Kenton. The role of Doctor Moreau was played by Charles Laughton in that film. It was adapted again, under its correct title, in 1977 in The Island of Dr. Moreau by director Don Taylor. The film starred Burt Lancaster as Doctor Paul Moreau with Michael York taking on the role of the Prendick character, albeit identified as Andrew Braddock. The story was adapted again in 1996 by John Frankenheimer, which yielded several production nightmares involving the cast and crew, and the departure of original director Richard Stanley. The film starred Marlon Brando as Doctor Moreau, with Val Kilmer as Montgomery, and David Thewlis as Edward Douglas.
