"Extremis" is a six-part storyline that takes place in issues #1-6 of Iron Man, Volume 4. The story was published from January to April, 2005 and was written by Warren Ellis with painted illustration artwork and covers by Adi Granov. The arc was lettered by Randy Gentile and edited by Tom Brevoort with Andy Schmidt, Molly Lazer, Nicole Wiley and Aubrey Sitterson as assistant editors.
"Extremis" is notable for introducing the concept of the Extremis enhancile to the Marvel Universe - a biotechnological compound that fuses nanite technology with chemical compounds and can affect micro-repairs to living organizms. In the story, a domestic terrorist named Mallen buys a black market sample of the Extremis drug and injects himself, giving himself enhanced superhuman capabilities. In the converse, the drug also escalates his own psychopathic tendencies and it is up to the armored Avenger Iron Man to stop him. By the close of the story, Tony Stark is infected with the Extremis himself and uses it to create an interface with his upgraded Iron Man Bio/Metalo-Mimetic Suit Series Mk III power armor.
The storyline also introduces two new supporting cast members to the Iron Man title: Maya Hansen - an old flame of Tony Stark's who is responsible for developing Extremis, and Sal Kennedy a techno-hippie who waxes philosophical about the ethics of science with Tony.

Notes & Trivia[]
- Writer Warren Ellis presents the reader with an updated re-imagining of Iron Man's origin. In this new origin, Tony Stark was nineteen-years-old and working alongside the United States army in Afghanistan prior to the Gulf War in 1991 (making him thirty-three as per the current publishing date). This will be the third time that Tony's origin has been updated. Originally, Tony Stark was well into adulthood advising soldiers in the battlefields of Vietnam during the Vietnam War when he suffered the injury that would later inspire him to become Iron Man. This was revealed in his introductory issue in Tales Of Suspense #39. Many years later, in an effort to keep Tony younger, the origin was revamped in such a way that it took place several years later and in a Chinese province, rather than Vietnam. This was revealed in Iron Man, Volume 1 #275.
