Invocation involves calling upon the power of a higher being in order to achieve some transmutative effect. This is often utilized in feats involving magic or sorcery, in which a spell caster may need to call upon the power of a deific being by offering up a prayer, a gift, a sacrifice, or some other form of praise.

There are several characters featured in books published by DC Comics who make use of this feat. When young Billy Batson shouts the name "Shazam", he calls down a bolt of mystic lightning, that transforms him into Earth's mightiest mortal - Captain Marvel. Bill Batson's friend, Freddy Freeman, actually says "Captain Marvel" in order to gain his superhuman abilities. Captain Marvel's nemesis, Black Adam, also speaks the word "Shazam", transforming the ancient Teth-Adam into Black Adam. Tangentially connected to this is Andrea Thomas, who invokes the phrase "Oh, mighty Isis", to channel power through the Amulet of Hatshepsut in order to becomes Isis.

On the ThunderCats cartoon series, the evil wizard Mumm-Ra usually took the form of a feeble, decrepit mummy. By invoking the words, “Ancient Spirits of Evil, transform this decayed form to Mumm-ra, the ever-living!”
