Plot[]

The Lambert family attend the funeral of family matriarch Lorraine Lambert. It has been nine years since the Lamberts suffered their harrowing experience with The Further, but the years have not been kind. Josh and Dalton have undergone hypnosis to make them completely forget about everything that had happened. Josh and Lorraine have since divorced and an intense riff exists between Josh and Dalton. Josh volunteers to drive Dalton to college where he is majoring in art, but the tension remains strong between them, despite Josh's efforts to bridge the divide.

At school, Dalton becomes roommates with a strange extroverted girl named Chris Winslow. The hypnotic curtain that had blocked both Dalton and Josh's memories begins to erode, and Dalton begins once again dreaming of The Further. Dalton externalizes his experiences by painting images of a red door in art class. As he tries to explain things to Chris, she shows him a Spectral Sightings YouTube video hosted by Steven "Specs" Fisher and Tucker Croft.

As supernatural influences begin to wash over him, Dalton convinces Chris into standing guard over his body while he attempts to navigate The Further via astral projection. This brings the Lipstick-Face demon to the forefront, and Dalton's soul is once again in danger.

Meanwhile, Josh is likewise awakening to small bits of memory as he begins to slowly recount spectral images of a man who turns out to be his father, Ben Burton. Like Josh and Dalton, Ben Burton also possessed the ability to astral project, but his own experiences in The Further drove him insane, and he ultimately took his own life. Josh reaches out to his ex-wife Renai, who tells him the truth about having his memory blocked. She reveals that she could never overcome the knowledge that it was Josh's corporeal form who killed Elise Rainier and tried to murder Dalton and she.

Josh's youngest son Foster shows his father one of Dalton's paintings that he had texted him, and Josh realizes that Dalton's life is now in danger. Renai aids Josh in once again accessing the dark recesses of The Further.

In The Further, the Lipstick-Face demon takes possession of Dalton and tries to use him to kill Chris Winslow. Josh's spirit appears and frees Dalton from the demon's influence. The demon chases them through the red door and Josh stays behind to keep it shut so Dalton will be safe, Dalton returns to his body and paints over his red door painting with black paint, which in turns seals the real door and The Further permanently.

Josh meets his father's spirit, who guides him back to the living world. Once back, Josh agrees to have dinner with Renai and the kids, hinting at a possible reunion. As he leaves, he unknowingly meets Elise's spirit, who tells him he has a bright future ahead of him. Josh then drives to Dalton's college, where father and son reconcile as Dalton presents a painting of Josh carrying a young Dalton out of The Further.
