History[]

Infinity Gems

The Infinity Stones.

The elements that coalesced into the Infinity Stones were once part of an ancient omnipotent being that existed millennia ago called a Celestial. This being was all that existed throughout infinity. Once it determined that its endless existence had no purpose, it committed suicide. From the ashes of this being sprang the universe. The Infinity Stones were aspects of the reincarnated soul of this being. [1]

Thousands of years later, the Mad Titan known as Thanos acquired all six Infinity Stones, for he understood the truth of their power. He fitted them into a gold-colored gauntlet and glove, which enabled him to harness the power of all six stones simultaneously. With this newfound power, Thanos regarded himself as a reborn god, whose power and influence dwarfed that of even the Celestials.

Operating from the ruins of a dead world, Thanos used the gauntlet to create a trans-dimensional conduit and pulled his old foes, the Silver Surfer and Drax the Destroyer to his location. Intoxicated with power, Thanos made a showy display of demonstrating the abilities of each of the gems to his opponent. Drax immediately went on the offensive and leaped at Thanos. Thanos used the Time Gem to freeze Drax in mid-leap. He then used the Time Stone to bring them to the planet's prehistoric past. As a further display of his mastery over the gems, he transported them all across space. He then altered Drax's soul to re-motivate his spirit, causing him to attack the Silver Surfer. He used the Mind Gem to assail their minds with images of people from their past. Thanos then warped reality, twisting the Surfer and Drax's physical bodies. He then used the Power Gem to render them both inert. Thanos' actions did not go unnoticed however. From his realm in Hell, Mephisto observed the events taking place on the dead world and decided that he coveted the Infinity Stones as well. [2]
