An identicard is a generic name used to describe a fictional object used to verify a person's identity. It is similar in function to a drivers' license or a social security card, but tends to appear more in the speculative fiction genre. Forging false credentials is a major crime in most regions, and the sale and trade of blank identification cards or chips is a lucrative industry in the underworld markets.
In the Star Wars mythos, most civilians living under the banner of the First Galactic Empire were required to carry some sort of identification on their person.
More than a decade before the battle of Yavin, the bandits Tobias Beckett, Rio Durant, and Val journeyed to the planet Hovun IV to steal a cache of blank ID chips from a man named Dvorad.
Thirteen years before the Batle of Yavin, a scrumrat named Han and his lover Qi'ra tried to bribe their way off of Corellia. When the officer at Coronet Spaceport asked to see their IDs, they claimed to not have any, but instead were willing to give her a vial of highly valuable coaxium. [1]
Years later, Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi were stopped in Mos Eisley by a squad of Imperial Stormtroopers asking to see his identification. Obi-Wan used a Jedi Mind Trick to convince the trooper that he did not need to see Luke's ID. [2]
