"Death Played a Sideshow"[]
A young man named Tom Mapes visits a carnival mentalist called the Amazing Krupke in the hopes of "purifying" his love for a girl. Krupke swindles Tom out of a thousand dollars, but when Tom's wishes fail to bear fruit, he returns to the carnival to demand his money back. During the altercation, Krupke hits Tom across the head with a heavy object, accidentally killing him. He dumps the body off a bridge to make it look like a suicide. Tom's friends, refusing to believe that Mapes took his own life, stage a ghostly hoax in the hopes of scaring Krupke into confessing to the murder. However, the actual ghost of Tom Mapes appears, and Krupke runs out of his carnival tent into the arms of the police, where he admits a full confession.
