Biography[]
Hortense Smiley was a middle-aged American woman who resided in Collinsport, Maine in the early-mid 19th century. She worked as a governess to the Collins family and was charged with looking after the wellbeing of a boy named Tad Collins.
Tad's mother, Samantha Drew Collins, had grown to despise her husband, Quentin. She sought to leave Collinsport and take Tad with her. Quentin caught Hortense Smiley attempting to leave the family estate of Collinwood with Tad's belongings. He instructed her to inform her mistress that her plan won't work, and then promptly fired Hortense.
Hortense left the house and made her way towards Rose Cottage. Along the way she discovered a headless body on the ground covered in leaves. As she cleared away the leaves, the body of Judah Zachary rose from the dead and strangled Hortense Smiley to death. [1]
