Honey Island Swamp is an actual marshland locale located in St. Tammany Parish in the eastern region of the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and is enclosed within the Pearl River wildlife management area. It is bordered on the west by the West Pearl River, and to the east by the Pearl River. It is bordered by Lake Borgne on the south and by U.S. 11 on the north.
A fictionalized version of Honey Island Swamp has been presented as the central setting of the Hatchet film series, which began in 2006 with Hatchet, and to date, includes three sequels including Hatchet II, Hatchet III, and Victor Crowley.
In the film series, Honey Island Swamp is the territory of Victor Crowley, a corporeal ghost known as a "repeater", which manifests in physical form to murder anyone that encroaches upon his territory. Similar to the actual cryptid known as the Honey Island swamp monster, Victor Crowley is a bipedal quasi-humanoid, whose physical depiction suggests massive birth defects.
Points of Interest[]
- Crowley residence
- This is the small wooded cabin residence of the Crowley family, which included Thomas Crowley, his wife Shyann and on occasion, a nurse named Lena. While his wife was dying from a terminal illness, Thomas Crowley had an affair with Lena, which produced a son - Victor. Shyann, aware of her husband's infidelity, cursed the offspring, so that it would be born hideously deformed and have a diminished mental capacity.
- Jack Cracker's shack
- This was a small fishing shack owned by a local named Jack Cracker. Immediately following the initial 2006 massacre committed by Victor Crowley, Jack offered sanctuary to sole survivor Marybeth Dunstan, bringing her back to his cabin, and offering her a jar of his own urine. When Cracker learned that Marybeth was the daughter of the man responsible for Victor Crowley's "death", he immediately banished her. Crowley broke into Jack Cracker's shack moments later and strangled him to death with his own intestines.
