A holoprojector is a device featured in the Star Wars multimedia franchise. It first appeared in the original 1977 film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. A holoprojector has the ability to record a video message and transmit in the form of a hologram to a receiver. It can also transmit live activity. In the first film, Leia Organa recorded a holographic message for Obi-Wan Kenobi and placed it into the droid, R2-D2. Luke Skywalker found the holo-recording while cleaning the droid. In the prequel series, Darth Sidious used a holoprojector to communicate with Nute Gunray and Rune Haako of the Trade Federation. Just before the onset of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi sent a message to the Jedi Council from Kamino giving them an update on the planet's cloning facility. Several years into the Clone Wars, members of the Jedi Council were active in the field, and could not attend the council chambers in person. Instead, they broadcast an image of themselves via a holoprojector.
