Hokkaidō is Japan's second largest island and the largest, northernmost of its 47 prefectural-level subdivisions. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from Honshu, although the two islands are connected by the underwater railway Seikan Tunnel. The largest city on Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo, which is also its only ordinance-designated city.
Hokkaidō is the birth place of Akira Ifukube, a notable film composer best known for scoring the original 1954 sci-fi/horror film Gojira, which was edited and repackaged two years later for Western audiences under the title Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
