Lab 13 is a fictional location featured in the Resident Evil multimedia franchise. It was seen in the 2002 film, Resident Evil, and played a pivotal role in the overall plot of the movie.
Description[]
Lab 13 was located in a top-secret underground scientific research facility known as the Hive, which was owned and operated by the Umbrella Corporation. It was but one of many such laboratories conducting experimentation in bio-weaponry as well as chemical agents for use by the U.S. military. One of Umbrella's computer programmers, Lisa Addison, secretly conspired with an Umbrella agent named Alice to expose Umbrella's bio-weapons projects, but this plan ultimately failed following a harrowing incident at the laboratory.
History[]
In September of 2002, a member of Umbrella's security staff, Spence Parks, broke into Lab 13 at the Hive and stole a suitcase containing vials of an antivirus to the deadly T-Virus contagion, which was being developed in the lab. He released one of the vials into the ventilation areas, contaminating the entire site, and thus had to make a hasty exit. The lab's artificial intelligence, the Red Queen, activated security measures, which included sealing off the infected areas, and flooding the laboratories, destroying research, as well as killing all of the attending staff.
In response to this incident, Umbrella sent a commando unit of Umbrella Security Service soldiers to the Hive to investigate and deactivate the Red Queen. They discovered that the T-Virus had turned all of the personnel at the base into flesh-eating zombies.
As the group ventured into the laboratory, they fought up against numerous zombies, as well as undead mutant dogs. A security agent named Alice learned that there was a cure to the contagion, but the existing antivirus samples had already been removed from the lab. Alice single-handedly took out at least eight mutant dogs as well as their zombie handler, Clarence. [1]
Staff[]
There were at least three research scientists and one security guard stationed at Lab 13.
