A hitchhiker is an individual who journeys without the benefit of a vehicle. They walk along roads and stick their thumbs out, which is a signal to motorists that they are looking for a ride. Hitchhiking is often considered a dangerous endeavor, as there is no established level of trust between the one who is hiking, or the driver that may stop for them. On the original Incredible Hulk television series, David Bruce Banner was often seen hitchhiking down a highway at the close of each episode.
The dangers of hitchhiking are often used as plot devices in the horror genre. In the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a crazed hitchhiker, who is later identified as Nubbins Sawyer, is picked up by five youths in a van. He reveals himself to be mentally unstable when he burns a photograph inside the van, then uses a knife to slash at the palm of Franklin Hardesty.
There is a joint American/Canadian television series called The Hitchhiker, which aired on HBO, and later the USA Network from 1983 to 1991. It was an anthology program that starred Page Fletcher as the eponymous "Hitchhiker", who served as the host for the series.
On The Secrets of Isis, two girls named Hope and Joanne were hitchhiking and picked up by two boys named Charlie and Steve. The boys drove very recklessly with the girls in the car, prompting Andrea Thomas to fly in as Isis and help them out before they could get into trouble.
