Biography[]
Helena Bertinelli grew up in the Bertinelli crime family of Gotham City. When she was a little girl, mobsters led by Stefano Galante, raided the Bertinelli mansion, slaughtering the entire family. One of the assassins took note that Helena was still alive, and hid her beneath some corpses, so that the others would not know she had survived. He later arranged for her to be transported to Sicily. Helena grew up nursing an extreme hatred of those who murdered her family, and trained herself in self defense in preparation for the day when she would be ready to take revenge. Calling herself the Huntress, she returned to Gotham City and began systematically taking down rival mobsters. Because she used a crossbow in her ventures, the media took to referring to her as "The Crossbow Killer" (a sobriquet that she despised). Helena's quest to take out the mob brought her into connection with other female adventurers, named Harleen Quinzel, Dinah Lance and Cassandra Cain, who collectively became known as the Birds of Prey and fought against Gotham's reigning mob boss, Roman "Black Mask" Sionis.
