Hel is a fictional location featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. It is associated with the Thor family of comic titles and first appeared in Journey Into Mystery #102 in March, 1964.
Hel is a mythical realm populated by the souls of the dead. It is ruled by its mistress, Hela, and is sometimes associated with the land of Niffleheim, which is one of the Nine Worlds of Asgard. Hel is an analog to Valhalla, which represents the afterworld for the souls of heroes slain in battle. Hel however, is reserved for the spirits of all those who did not fall in a heroic campaign. It's name suggests that it is a place of a evil, or perhaps an analog to the Judeo-Christian concept of Hell, but this is not the case. A spirit sent to Hel, is not there as a form of punishment, but rather, it is the natural place for the soul of any normal citizen of Asgard. Hela herself however, is absolutely evil, and her twisted mind has warped and re-shaped Hel to match her dark persona.
