Haywood was criminal court judge presiding over the city of New York. Haywood was coaxed into presiding over a very unconventional trial, wherein accused attempted murderer Charles Czarkowski was pleading self-defense in a shooting incident against a "John Doe", who was destined to kill Czarkowski in less than a month. Jury selection was pulled from a pool that existed in the future. Their placement at the trial was coordinated by the Time Variance Authority.
