Hawks are birds of prey, also referred to as raptors, and are characterized by their sharp talons, which are ideal for swooping down and grasping prey, especially fish. Hawks come in a variety of colors, but usually have brown and white plumage.

- Man from Atlantis: The Hawk of Mu: A hawk appeared in this episode. Presumably, it originated from the mythical kingdom of Mu.
- New Mutants 32: Ashake of Ancient Egypt had a hawk on a perch in her chamber room when the time traveling Dani Moonstar and Illyana Rasputin came to visit her in Cairo.
- Justice League of America: Between Two Armies: Hawkman owns a pet hawk that he keeps near his side and talks to on occasion.

- The Egyptian patron God, Horus, is characterized as having the head of a hawk in ancient mythology.
- Hawk is also the name of a character who appeared on the TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. He was played by actor Thom Christopher and appeared in season two of the show.
- Hawk is the code name for Clayton M. Abernathy, who is one of the main characters from the animated television series G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, its Marvel Comics adaptation series, as well as the G.I. Joe: Sigma Six series by Hasbro and a character played by Dennis Quaid in the live-action film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra in 2009.
- Hawk is the superhero code name for Hank Hall who, along with his brother Don Hall, made up the superhero duo known as Hawk and Dove.
- In DC Comics during World War II, the Blackhawk Squadron had a literal black hawk for a mascot, which was named Blackie. Blackie came to the aid of the Blackhawk Squadron who had fallen into a trap laid by Killer Shark. Blackie helped the Blackhawks escape and as such became the squad's official team mascot. Blackie shared in many of the Blackhawk's adventures during and after the war.
- In DC Comics, the characters of Hawkman and Hawkwoman (or Hawkgirl) are sometimes referred to collectively as "The Hawks".
- Depending upon their accent, some people may pronounce Hulk the same as Hawk, but otherwise there are no similarities between the two.
- In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character of Clint Barton, Hawkeye, was referred to as "The Hawk" by Erik Selvig (Thor (2011)).
