A harpoon is a long spear-like instrument used in fishing to catch fish or large marine mammals such as whales. It accomplishes this task by impaling the target animal, allowing the fishermen to use a rope or chain attached to the butt of the projectile to catch the animal. A harpoon can also be used as a weapon.
In fiction[]
In DC Comics, Aquaman sported a prosthetic hand for a while, which was a harpoon attached to a grappling line. The "Mercy Reef" unaired pilot episode of a failed Aquaman series included a character named McCaffery, who was a fisherman and lighthouse keeper that used a harpoon. A wicked sea nymph named Nadia attacked McCaffery and nearly killed him by stabbing him with his own harpoon.
In Marvel Comics, a mutant super-villain named Kodiak Noatak went by the code name of Harpoon. He also employed a supply of short harpoons, which he could infuse with his own bio-energy and hurl them as enhanced projectiles. During the "Mutant Massacre", he used these to kill a Morlock named Zeek and to pin Angel to the wall by his wings.
