Haly's Circus is a fictional business featured in comic books published by DC Comics. It is associated with the Batman line of comic titles and plays a key role in the origin of Dick Grayson, aka Robin, and later Nightwing. It first appeared in Detective Comics #38 in April, 1940.
Haly's Circus was a traveling circus that was founded by Garrison Haly and his family. Their star attraction was a family of trapeze artists known as the Flying Graysons, which is made of up of Richard and Mary Grayson, and their young son, Dick Grayson.
A criminal known as Boss Zucco tried to blackmail old man Haly to take control of the circus, so they could use its caravan for drug smuggling. When this initial tactic failed, they decided to up the ante through an act of sabotage. They placed acid on the trapeze swings, weakening the ropes. During an act, the Flying Graysons were performing their stunts, when the ropes snapped and John and Mary Grayson fell to their deaths. Their young son Dick watched in horror as they plummeted to the ground. One of the audience patrons was Bruce Wayne who sympathized with the now orphaned Grayson. He took him under his wing and trained him how to fight crime as his sidekick, Robin.
