A halfling is a mythical creature seen in media of the fantasy genre. The term originated with English author J. R. R. Tolkien, as an alternative means of describing a fictional race known as a hobbit. The term has since evolved beyond Tolkien's Lord of the Rings mythology and has been adapted by alternative media.
A halfling may refer to a race of creature that are short in height and possess elf-like physical characteristics. It may also refer to a character who is a mixture of different races.
Fairy halflings[]
A fairy halfling is a creature that is half-fairy in origin and half of another race; usually human. Fairy halflings play a major role in the HBO supernatural drama series True Blood. As eventually revealed towards the end of season three of the show, the character of Sookie Stackhouse is a fairy halfling, though her fairy blood actually extends back several generations. As such, she possesses certain magical gifts, including the ability to telepathically perceive the thoughts of others, and the ability to project fairy light, which can strike with concussive force. Fairy blood and halfling blood possess unique traits, which makes them highly coveted by vampires, who gain additional sustenance and even a feeling of intoxication upon drinking Fae-tainted blood. Sookie's brother, Jason Stackhouse, is also technically a Fairy halfling, but the mystical traits of the Fae sometimes skip a generation, and as such, Jason does not possess the same abilities as his sister.
Another group of Fairy halflings presented in the show are the children of a human named Andy Bellefleur. Andy was seduced by a Fae named Maurella, who became pregnant with his children. [1]
Remaining on Earth for only a brief period, she carried to term very quickly and within the span of only a few weeks, gave birth to four daughters. Maurella disappeared back into the Fairy Realm after giving birth, leaving Andy to care for the girls by himself, which he named Adilyn Bellefleur, Braelin Bellefleur, Charlaine Bellefleur, and Danika Bellefleur. As these daughters were half-Fae, they matured at a highly accelerated rate and grew to adolescence within the span of days.
