"Somebody's Got to Do It" is the title to the first issue of the second Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comics. The story was written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning with artwork by Paul Pelletier and inks by Rick Magyar. It was colored by Nathan Fairbairn and lettered by Joe Caramagna of Virtual Calligraphy. The story was edited by Bill Rosemann with Lauren Sankovitch as assistant editor. This issue shipped with a July, 2008 cover date and carries a cover price of $2.99 per copy (US).

- This issue shipped with a variant wrap-around cover, which is actually pages from the comic itself. It was illustrated by Paul Pelletier, Rick Magyar, and Nathan Fairbairn.
- This issue is reprinted in the Guardians of the Galaxy: Legacy and Guardians of the Galaxy: All-New Marvel Treasury Edition trade paperback collections.
- The character of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, was created by writer Steve Englehart and artists Steve Gan and Bob McLeod. He first appeared in the first story in Marvel Preview #4 titled "Starlord First House: Earth" in January, 1976. This version of Peter Quill has since been retroactively associated to the Earth-791 reality. The Earth-616 version of Peter Quill first appeared in the "Samaritan (Part 2): Dark Alliances" story from Thanos #8 in June, 2004. This version of the character was created by writer Keith Giffen, artist Ron Lim, and inker Al Milgrom.
- The character of Adam Warlock was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. He first appeared under the name of "Him" in Fantastic Four #66 in September, 1967. The character evolved into the Warlock persona in Marvel Premiere #1 in April, 1972.
- The character of Gamora was created by writer and artist Jim Starlin. She first appeared in Strange Tales #180 in June, 1975 in a story titled "The Judgment!"
- The character of Drax, aka Arthur Douglas was created by writer Mike Friedrich and artist Jim Starlin. He first appeared in the "Beware the... Blood Brothers!" story from Iron Man, Volume 1 #55 in February, 1973, which also happens to be the first appearance of Thanos.
- The character of Rocket Raccoon was created by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Sal Buscema. He first appeared in the "Now Somewhere In the Black Holes of Sirius Major There Lived a Young Boy Name of Rocket Raccoon!" story from The Incredible Hulk #271 in May, 1982.
- The character of Groot was created by writer Larry Lieber and artist Jack Kirby. He was originally introduced as one of the "Pre-Marvel" age sci-fi monsters in the pages of Tales to Astonish #13 in 1960, but has since become a part of the mainstream Marvel Universe.
- The character of Phyla-Vell, who is the second costumed hero to go by the code-name of Quasar, was created by writer Peter David and artist Paul Azaceta. She first appeared in Captain Marvel, Volume 5 #16 in January, 2004 in a story called "Crazy Like a Fox (Part 2): Uh-Uh". She first donned the Quantum bands on took on the name Quasar in Annihilation: Conquest: Quasar #1 in September, 2007.
- Two of Rocket Raccoon's suggestions for the new team name are "Ass-Kickers of the Fantastic" and "Rocket Raccoon and His Human Hangers-On". When these get voted down, he offers up "The Annihilators", "Protectors of the Universe", "The Quantum Band", "The Pro-Actives", and even The "Defenders" (which is already a team).
- Drax offers up the potential team name of "Drax and His Coonskin Hat".
- Cosmo has his own input with suggestions of "The Retrievers" and "K-Nine".
- Eighty-nine members of the U.C.T. Templeship Tancred are killed during the space warp fissure incident.
