Synopsis[]
Having left Conjunction, the Guardians continue on their job for the Collector in trying to find a valuable Pandorian crystal. After sailing through an asteroid field, the Guardians find themselves on a planet populated by a primitive tribe of villagers. By luck, they have a Pandorian crystal. Star-Lord trades a laser torch for it and the villagers think they have gotten the better part of the deal.
Suddenly, a race or large rock monsters called Rexians attack the village. They have been infected by an alien fungus from a nearby meteorite which makes the murderous creatures. The Guardians fight and destroy the Rexians and the villagers hail them as heroes. But Groot becomes infected by some of the fungus and grows into a giant creature that begins destroying everything.
Rocket and Peter Quill manage to get inside of Groot's internal structure while Drax and Gamora fight his stabbing tree limbs outside. They find the Pandorian crystal and Quill interreacts with it. This causes the fungus infecting Groot to die.
However, Titus - the Xandarian Corpsmen who has been doggedly harassing them is hot on their trail. Spotting the over-sized Groot, he disobeys the Nova Corps commands and unleashes a highly destructive antimatter missile - a weapon so powerful that it threatens to wipeout everything within Groot's vicinity - including the Guardians and the villagers. Drax manages to intercept the missile and alters its trajectory so that it flies off away from the village. The missile strikes the meteorite that had first brought the fungus to the planet and Groot returns to normal.
Titus is undeterred and wishes to continue his aggression against the Guardians. The village chieftain warns Titus that the Guardians are their friends and threatens to tell the Nova Corps about how he over-stepped his authority in attacking an innocent species. Begrudgingly, Titus agrees to leave them alone and flies off.

- The original Guardians of the Galaxy were created by writer Arnold Drake and artists Gene Colan and Mike Esposito. They first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in January, 1969. This was a super-hero team from the 31st century of an alternate timeline known as Earth-691 who fought up against the oppressive galactic threat of the Badoon. The modern era mainstream reality iteration of the group were first known as Star-Lord's Kree Squad, and first appeared in Annihilation Conquest: Starlord #1 in September, 2007 by writer Keith Giffen and artist Timothy Green II. They became known as the Guardians of the Galaxy in Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2 #1 in July, 2008. This version of the group was created by writers Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning and artist Paul Pelletier. The version of the Guardians that is featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is based on this iteration of the team.
Allusions[]
