- The character of Hal Jordan, aka Green Lantern, was created by writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane. He first appeared in Showcase #22 in October, 1959 in a story titled "S.O.S. Green Lantern!" He received his first ongoing Green Lantern comic book series in August, 1960.

- This is the first appearance of Saarek, who is a member of the Green Lantern Corps. He is named for the character of Sarek from Star Trek, and is patterned in the likeness and customs of Sarek's race, the Vulcans. Saarek appears next in issue #97.
- This is the first appearance of the Hallas, who is the first living law enforcement division enacted by the Guardians of the Universe prior to the formation of the Green Lantern Corps. They were created following the discontinuation of the Manhunters.
