The Gobi Desert is a large desert located in Asia that occupies parts of Mongolia and northwestern China. It has a total length of 932 miles (1,500 kilometers) and a width of 800 kilometers. It has an area of 500,002 square miles. It kind of looks like Tatooine. Then again, most deserts do, don't they?
On the original British science fiction television series Doctor Who, the First Doctor traveled to China in the 13th century, along with his companions, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, and Barbara Wright, where they encountered the Venetian trader and explorer, Marco Polo. Their journey brought them across the Gobi Desert. [1]
The Gobi Desert appeared in the 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In the film, scientists discover the tramp steamer ship, the SS Cotopaxi, which had disappeared back in 1925. Its sudden reappearance remained a mystery, though some have theorized that extraterrestrial forces had a hand in its return. [2]
