Ghoulies is an American horror film of the monster/comedy subgenres. It was directed by Luca Bercovici and written by Bercovicci and Jefery Levy. The movie was produced by Empire Pictures and released theatrically in the United States on March 2nd, 1985. It is the first installment in what would become a four-film movie series.
Ghoulies stars Peter Liapis as Jonathan Graves, Lisa Pelikan as Rebecca, Michael Des Barres as Malcolm Graves, Jack Nance as Wolfgang and Peter Risch as Grizzel. Other cast members include Tamara De Treaux, Scott Thompson, Ralph Seymour, Keith Joe Dick and future Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay.
Although conceived under the title Beasties as far back as 1983, Ghoulies owes a lot of it's success and popularity to Gremlins - a 1984 dark comedy, which also features small demonic-looking creatures immersed in a series of comedic antics. Ghoulies evokes a more Satanic reference than Gremlins however, with scenes involving the occult, possession and the revelation that the Ghoulies presented in the film are actually demons.
