Ghost Rider is the name of several different characters featured in horror-themed comic book titles published by Marvel Comics. The original Ghost Rider, who has since become known as the Night Rider and the Phantom Rider, was a Western hero named Carter Slade. The more prominent and well known iteration of the character is motorcycle stunt rider Johnny Blaze, who became the Ghost Rider after making a deal with the devil that bonded his body to a demonic Spirit of Vengeance known as Zarathos. The character of Johnny Blaze was created by writers Gary Friedrich & Roy Thomas and artist Mike Ploog. He first appeared as the title story in Marvel Spotlight #5 in August, 1972.Johnny disappeared for a while following his eighty-issue stint in Ghost Rider, Volume 2. A new Ghost Rider rode onto the scene in 1990, only this time it was a young man from Brooklyn named Danny Ketch who found a motorcycle in a junkyard and became host for a Spirit of Vengeance once known as Noble Kale. The team of Ketch & Kale enjoyed a ninety-four issue run in Ghost Rider, Volume 3, as well as numerous crossover and guest-star appearances. The third young man to assume the identity of Ghost Rider was Robbie Reyes. Reyes first appeared in the premiere issue of his own series, All-New Ghost Rider #1 in May, 2014. The character has also appeared in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is part of the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he was played by actor Gabriel Luna. In 2011, the Ghost Rider franchise saw its first female lead in the form of Alejandra Jones. Jones was the main character featured in Ghost Rider, Volume 7, which also happened to star original Spirit of Vengeance host, Johnny Blaze.
