General Chang is a fictional military commander featured in the Star Trek multimedia franchise. He appeared in the sixth installment of the original film series, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, where he was played by actor Christopher Plummer. The licensed Star Trek works such as the Star Trek: Klingon Academy video game have also expanded upon the character adding elements to his history that was not revealed in the feature film.

Overview[]

General Chang was a member of the Klingon race and was active during the late 23rd century. He commanded an experimental variant of a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, which had the ability to fire it's phasers while cloaked (a characteristic uncommon to most starships). Though General Chang initially appeared as a loyal supporter of Klingon Chancellor Gorkon, he was in fact a key member of a secret conspiracy to sabotage peace talks between the Klingons and the Federation following the destruction of the Klingon homeworld. General Chang engaged in a space battle against the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A, commanded by Captain James T. Kirk and the USS Excelsior NCC-2000, commanded by Captain Hikaru Sulu in which he ultimately lost his life.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The character of General Chang was created by director Nicholas Meyer and writers Leonard Nimoy, Lawrence Konner, Mark Rosenthal and Denny Martin Flinn, based upon concepts originally developed by franchise creator Gene Roddenberry.
  • Though a stalwart Klingon through and through, General Chang did possess a notable affection for the works of 16th century Earth playwright William Shakespeare and was often found quoting his plays, right up until his dying breath. Chang's final words before dying aboard his Bird-of-Prey were "To be or not to be...", which appears in act III, scene I of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Earlier in the film, during the final battle, Chang excitedly exclaims, "Cry 'Havoc', and let slip the dogs of war!", which comes from a famous line in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.
