Class: | Battlestar |
1st appearance: | "Saga of a Star World (Part 1)" |
Galactica is the proper name of a fictional space vessel featured in the Battlestar Galactica multimedia franchise. There have been two different vessels to share this name, the original being from the 1978-1979 TV series as well as it's short-lived spin-off Galactica 1980. Former Star Trek: Deep Space Nine executive producer Ronald D. Moore re-imagined the franchise in a darker, grimmer setting and the Galactica was brought to life once again beginning in Moore's 2003 Battlestar Galactica television miniseries and the 2004 Battlestar Galactica regular series. Though there are many cosmetic and structural differences between the two ships, they both served similar functions and provided the primary setting for each series.
Description[]
The Galactica was a capital ship and one of the primary battleships, known as battlestars of the Twelve Colonies of Man. An unexpected sneak attack by the Cylons not only left the Galactica as the last of the great Battlestars, but it also resulted in the utter destruction of the colony worlds themselves. Following the initial battle, the Galactica 's commander, Adama, led a ragtag fugitive fleet away from Cylon space on a desperate journey to find the mythological thirteenth colony, in the belief that doing so would pave the way for their salvation. The thirteenth colony was believed to be Earth. This basic premise was common to both the original Battlestar Galactica and the remake series.

Notes & Trivia[]
- Another Battlestar of note was the Pegasus, which was commanded by Commander Cain. It too survived the initial assault against the colonies, but was presumed destroyed. The crew of the Galactica reunited with the Pegasus during Commander Cain's campaign to lay siege to the Cylons at Gamoray. [1]
