- The title of this episode has a double meaning. Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of a family or individual. In the United States and Canada it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. The events from the first part of this story takes place on Mother's Day. The events from the second part of this story deals with a negligent mother and the lack of relationship that she has with her daughter.
- Billy Hastings observes the mounted head of a wild boar on the wall of Al's home and calls it "Porky". This is a reference to Porky Pig, is an animated character featured in Looney Tunes cartoon shorts. He is known for having a speech impediment and not wearing pants.
- Billy Hastings observes the mounted head of a moose on the wall of Al's home and calls it "Bullwinkle". This is a reference to Bullwinkle J. Moose, who is an animated character featured on the Rocky and His Friends cartoon series and later on The Bullwinkle Show.
- Billy Hastings observes the mounted head of a deer on the wall of Al's home and calls it "Bambi". This is a reference to the titular fawn featured in the 1942 animated film Bambi by Walt Disney Productions.
