A force field is a field of energy that prevents matter from penetrating it. In many cases, the electromagnetic energy provided by a force field generator is invisible. Force fields are most commonly seen in media of the science fiction and superhero fantasy genres, as well as many cartoon programs.
On Doctor Who, the Daleks employed a planetary force field around the Dalek Asylum. It could only be deactivated from inside the planet's systems itself, so even the Daleks could not penetrate it with orbital bombardment. However, small vessels and objects, such a small spacecraft could penetrate the planetary field without harm. A ship-wrecked woman named Oswin Oswald, who had been converted into a Dalek, shut down the force field, enabling the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, and Rory Williams the chance to escape before the Daleks blew up the planet.
