The Forbidden Zone may refer to a singular or multiple locations featured in the Planet of the Apes multimedia franchise. For purposes of clarification, this article is distinguished from the Forbidden City, which is a separate yet equally important locale featured in the franchise. The original Forbidden Zone was shown in the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. A more inclusive journey into the Forbidden Zone was explored in Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
The Forbidden Zone is an area of North America along the Eastern seaboard in the late 40th century. It includes areas that were once occupied by New York City and its surrounding environs. By this time era, the world had been destroyed through nuclear Armageddon, rendering the human population almost nonexistent. Those who do survive - the original descendants of pre-apocalyptic Earth, have mutated into disfigured subterranean isolationists. Although blasted into ash, dust, and largely buried beneath the Earth, large remnants of New York City remained intact.
The outside edges of the Forbidden Zone became a barren wasteland, though the remains of what was once the Statue of Liberty can be found along the coastline.
