A flail is a handheld melee weapon used in Medieval times. It consists of a handle attached to a length of rope or chain, which terminates with a spiked ball. Users could swing the flail about, gaining momentum, then using it to strike an opponent.
A flail was one of many such weapons that made up Hawkman's arsenal, though he usually preferred a mace, which is similar to a flail, but does not include a length of chain between the shaft and the head. Cindy Burman, aka Shiv, had a spiked ball attached to her ponytail, which effectively turned her hair into a flail.
