Based on the 1909 novel by H.G. Wells. This is the second feature film adaptation of Wells' book. The first was a UK film in 1919 directed by Bruce Gordon and J.L.V. Leigh. It is not to be confused with Georges Méliès silent classic A Trip to the Moon, which was filmed in 1902.

Ray Harryhausen served as an associate producer on the film. Harryhausen is best known as a revolutionary in the field of stop-motion animation and is responsible for creating the visual effects for films such as 20 Million Miles to Earth, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans. Harryhausen also provided the stop-motion effects for the Prime Lunar and the Moon Cows featured in this film. Harryhausen often collaborated with producer Charles H. Schneer on many of his projects.
Elements of the original Wells' novel were incorporated into Alan Moore's popular comic book series League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, particularly the use of the fictional mineral, Cavorite.
