Overview[]
Firestorm is the code-name of a comic book superhero featured in titles published by DC Comics. He was introduced in the first issue of his own short-lived ongoing series Firestorm, The Nuclear Man, published from March-November, 1978. Firestorm is a gestalt character, which means that he is actually two separate entities that combine to form a singular being. Classically, Firestorm is made up of teenager Ronnie Raymond and scientist Martin Stein. Later iterations of the character introduced new hosts for the Firestorm Matrix.
Firestorm made his television debut in 1984 when he became a member of the Super Friends, and a regularly seen character on Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show. He was portrayed by actors Mark L. Taylor, who voiced Ronnie Raymond, and Olan Soule, who voiced Professor Stein. Their personalities and abilities were similar to that of their comic book counterparts in that Ronnie was the happy-go-lucky teen, while Stein was the pragmatic mentor. Raymond was the dominant aspect of Firestorm and assumed the physicality of the being, while Stein existed as an aspect of Ronnie's subconscious, often taking on the appearances of a translucent disembodied head.
A live-action version of Firestorm was introduced in 2014 in the CW Network television series The Flash. In this mythology, Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein were both scientists. Raymond was played by Robbie Amell while Stein was played by Victor Garber. Firestorm made a handful appearances on the series, but underwent some changes just before becoming a series regular on Legends of Tomorrow. Ronnie Raymond stepped out, paving the way for newcomer Jefferson Jackson to take on the physical host of the Firestorm matrix. Jefferson Jackson, often referred to as just "Jax", was played by Franz Drameh, and was a series regular for the first three seasons of the show.
