- This episode was originally scheduled to air on series creator Joss Whedon's birthday, however it was one of the last remaining episodes of the series and went unaired.
- This episode aired after "Serenity" and before "Trash", but in terms of viewing order, it takes place after "The Message", but before "Objects in Space".
- "Heart of Gold" was nominated for a Hugo award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 2004.
- This is the only episode of Firefly directed by Thomas J. Wright. Coincidentally, Thomas would go on to direct several episodes of the ABC television series Castle which stars Nathan Fillion. Tom Wright also directed the "Revelations" episode of Threshold.
- This is the only episode of the series written by Brett Matthews. However, Brett did write the "Those Left Behind" story-arc from the Serenity comic book series which bridged the gap between the conclusion of Firefly and the Serenity feature film.
