The Fifth Column is a fictional organization featured in the V television franchise. It's name is derived from a clandestine group of supporters under the command of General Emilio Mola during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. The term has also been applied to American Nazi sympathizers during World War II. In V, the Fifth Column is a separatist milia committed towards overthrowing the forces of the alien Visitors. In the original V mini-series, the Fifth Column was comprised of Visitors who were opposed to the actions of their own people. The leader of the Fifth Column was a high-ranking Visitor named Martin. The Fifth Column often worked alongside the Human Resistance, who shared similar goals, but was made up chiefly of humans. In the 2009 relaunch of the V franchise, the Fifth Column are a subversive group made up of both humans and Visitors. The series focuses primarily on the New York City branch of the Fifth Column, but also spotlights the actions of other Fifth Column members from around the country. The Fifth Column was created by a Visitor named John May who died some ten years prior to the public arrival of the Visitor fleet. The New York branch of the Fifth Column does not have a command leader per se, but most of the members defer to the advice of FBI agent Erica Evans.
