Female refers to one of two primary genders of all living organisms and even some non-living. Yes, even the undead have a gender. Females are defined by an XX chromosome as opposed to the XY chromosome possessed by those of the male gender.
Those of the female gender are distinguished by a variety of physical and biochemical properties, the most obvious of which is the presence of internal genitalia, and enlarged mammaries. Nearly all living creatures, including various forms of plant life are either female or male, though there are some beings that exist that are either genderless or a combination of multiple genders known as hermaphrodites. Ewwww.
In the 1993 film Jurassic Park, the good and wise folks over at InGen thought that they could control the population of their genetically cloned dinosaurs by breeding them all as females. Fools. I think we all know how THAT turned out for them.

- The character of Strax from Doctor Who often had difficulty distinguishing gender. He persistently referred to Clara Oswald as "boy" or "lad" when she was very obviously a woman.
