The Fantasticar is the name of a fictional hover craft featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The Fantasticar is one of several conveyances used by the superhero team known as the Fantastic Four. It first appeared in Fantastic Four, Volume 1 #3.
Description[]
The Fantasticar is an open-air hovercraft capable of atmospheric flight. It has four sectional seating pods, which are detachable from the other components with each one boasting it's own propulsion system for short-range jaunts. The front chamber is the pilot station followed by two sections attached side-by-side. The anterior chamber is the same dimensions as the cockpit section and is large enough to house one of larger girth, such as the Thing. It has no onboard weaponry.
There have been several different versions and upgrades to the Fantasticar over the years. The Mk I Fantasticar, often referred to as the "Flying Bathtub", was designed and built by team leader Reed Richards could reach a maximum velocity of 60 miles per hour up to two-hundred miles. Each singular compartment could reach a speed of 30 miles per hour up to 100 miles. The Mk I had a carrying capacity of 1,200 lbs.
The second Fantasticar, the Mk II, was designed by FF team member Johnny Storm and built almost entirely by himself in the motor pool garage at the Baxter Building. It had a more powerful engine assembly than the Mk I and could reach a speed of 550 miles per hour and could climb to an altitude ceiling of 30,000 feet. The Mk II also included twin miniplanes that could detach themselves and operate independently from the Fantasticar via remote control.
History[]
Reed Richards piloted the Fantasticar by himself when he enlisted the aid of Doctor Strange to help him track down Diablo. [1]
Notes & Trivia[]
- In the Ultimate Marvel universe, teenage Reed Richards built a Fantasticar while he was employed by the Manhattan-based government think tank, the Baxter Building. Johnny Storm Christened it The Awesome. This vehicle could reach a maximum velocity of Mach 7.
- A version of the Fantasticar also appeared in the 2005 feature film Fantastic Four. This version had a sleeker design and bore little resemblance to the original Flying Bathtub.
