A facehugger, or face-hugger, is the second stage of development in the life-cycle of an alien xenomorph. A facehugger is born from an ovomorph egg laid by a queen. When a living host is within proximity of a fertile egg, the egg "hatches", and a facehugger emerges attaching itself to the host's face. The host is rendered temporarily comatose during this process as the facehugger implants a xenomoprh fetus into the host by way of the mouth. This fetus will emerge as a chestburster, killing the host, and from there develop into a fully grown xenomorph. After the implantation process is complete, the facehugger detaches itself from the host and dies.
