Extrasensory perception, often abbreviated as ESP is a form of psychokinesis, which relates to the thoughts and sensations of others as perceived strictly through energy of the mind, rather than the standard perceived senses. Sub-applications of extrasensory perception includes precognition, which is the ability to perceive potential future events, post-cognition, which is the ability to glean information about past occurrences without the benefit of external resources, and telepathy, which is communication between two minds without speaking. Another application of precognition is clairvoyance, which has also been referred to as a "Sixth Sense", though this is often mis-labeled and can sometimes be experienced as as measure of gut instinct.
The term Extrasensory perception was first used by Sir Richard Burton (not to be confused with actor Richard Burton). The term implies acquisition of information by means external to the basic limiting assumptions of science, such as that organisms can only receive information from the past to the present.
