Exorcist: The Beginning is an American independent feature film of the Satanic possession subgenre of horror. It is the fourth installment in the Exorcist film series and was released more than a decade after the previous chapter, The Exorcist III. The movie was directed by Renny Harlin with a script written by Alexi Hawley based on a story treatment by William Wisher and Caleb Carr. It was produced by Morgan Creek Productions and premiered in Hollywood, California on August 18th, 2004. It opened nationally in the U.S. on August 20th.

  • Characters and concepts presented in this film, in particular Lankester Merrin and Pazuzu, are inspired by the 1971 novel The Exorcist by author William Peter Blatty. Blatty's novel was adapted into a feature film in 1973 directed by William Friedkin.
  • The tagline for this film is "God Is Not Here".
  • Exorcist: The Beginning is basically a re-tooled project filmed by Paul Schrader. Executives from Morgan Creek Productions feared that it would be a financial failure, so they hired Renny Harlin to complete and re-edit the movie. Due to the commercial failure of Exorcist: The Beginning, Paul Schrader was allowed to complete and release his version of the film, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, which involved many of the same cast and crew members.
  • Production on Exorcist: The Beginning began on November 15th, 2003. Principal shooting concluded on February 22nd, 2004. Scenes from the movie were shot in Casablanca in Morocco with studio shots being filmed in Rome, Italy. [1]
  • Exorcist: The Beginning grossed $18,054,001 over its opening weekend, and grossed $41,821,986 during its entire domestic run off of a budget of $80,000,000. It grossed $36,288,035 internationally for a worldwide gross of $78,110,021 (0.6 times production budget). [2] It opened at number one at the box office, beating out Without a Paddle, which was also a new release. It overtook another horror film, AVP: Alien vs. Predator, which was in its second week. [3]
  • On the movie review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, Exorcist: The Beginning holds a 10% Rotten score on the Tomatometer based on 134 approved critic reviews. It has an audience score of 27% based on more than 50,000 ratings. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist fares only slightly better with a 30% on the Tomatometer, but dips slightly in the audience score with 25% based on 10,000+ ratings. [4]
  • Exorcist: The Beginning is Renny Harlin's fourteenth film as a director. It is his twelfth theatrically released film and his third film in the horror genre after A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and Deep Blue Sea.
