An exorcist is an individual who, put simply, performs exorcisms. This practice involves using prayer, religious iconography, and repetition in an effort to withdraw a possessing entity, such as a demon, an unclean spirit, or even an alien from the mind and body of a human victim. In most cases, exorcisms are performed by ordained priests, who are only allowed to do so with the blessing of the Catholic church. Some however, may attempt to perform exorcisms based strictly on their force of will and knowledge of the occult. Performing an exorcism upon a victim who is not truly possessed poses several risks, including irreparable harm to the psyche of the individual. Depending upon the spiritual strength of the possessing entity, the exorcist themselves may be placed at no small measure of risk.
