Synopsis[]
As Evil Ernie is getting pummeled by dozens of inmates, he briefly recalls an incident five years ago when he first came to Widmark and had been hospitalized. Prison physician Thana Thomas had showed Ernie kindness, and Ernie told her about his mission to punish the sinners of the world.
Smiley snaps him out of his reverie and Ernie picks up an assault rifle and begins blasting at the inmates. Before long though, the other inmates overwhelm him and Ernie is powerless. Smiley warned him about expending too much energy. Buford King decides to punish his foster son by cutting his left arm off with a hacksaw. He tosses the severed limb to Thana, then tells Ernie that he wants his power or he's going to kill her. Ernie confesses that he doesn't know anything about how his power works. Smiley steps up and tells Buford that if he wants Ernie's power, all he needs to do is eat his heart. This tactic of course backfires and when Buford tries to rip Ernie's heart out, his own arm begins to blister until it explodes.
Smiley laughs maniacally, grows a set of vestigial legs, then leaps upon another inmate. He chews through the man's face, as Ernie struggles to fight off other prisoners. Smiley chews his way through the inmates heart and spits out some blood. Citing that "somebody had to eat a heart", he watches as Ernie's energy restores itself. Buford meanwhile, picks up Ernie's severed arm and takes off with Thana Thomas. From above, the prison chaplain watches the scene.
The chaplain intercepts Evil Ernie and reveals that he is possessed by the spirit of the archangel Uriel. He tells Ernie that this is not his destiny and shows him a glimpse of the life that could have been. The priest tells him that his destiny was to be Heaven's greatest general in the eternal war against Hell. Ernie admonishes this idea of a holy mission and says that "God can go fuck himself!"
Suddenly, the reanimated inmate that is still housing Smiley within its chest appears behind the chaplain and stabs him through the skull with some unidentifiable object. Smiley looks at Ernie and says, "Did you not know I could do this?"
