Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, also known as Evil Dead II, and Evil Dead 2, is an American feature film of the horror and dark comedy genres. It is a sequel to the 1981 movie The Evil Dead and was written and directed by Sam Raimi with Scott Spiegel as screenplay writer. It was produced by Robert G. Tapert and stars Bruce Campbell, reprising the roll of Ash Williams from the first film.
Filming took place in Michigan and North Carolina in 1986 and the film was released in the United States on March 13, 1987. It was a minor box office success, achieving just under $6 million. As of July 26, 2006, the total U.S. box office gross is $10.9 million. It also received critical acclaim with critics notably praising Raimi's direction and Campbell's role as the protagonist.
Like the original, Evil Dead II has gone on to receive a large cult following, and is widely considered one of the greatest horror films of all time. The film was eventually followed by a third installment in the Evil Dead series, Army of Darkness in 1992, as well as a television series Ash vs. Evil Dead in 2015.
