Overview[]
Etrigan is a yellow-skinned demon from Hell who has been active in the Earth realm since medieval times. Through various spells, curses or arrangements, he often finds himself fighting for the forces of good and has been aligned with the wizard Merlin in his ongoing battle against the sorceress Morgaine le Fey. To keep Etrigan's murderous rages in check, he has been bonded to a human named Jason Blood. The bonding of demon to human has caused Blood to be rendered immortal and he has been active in Europe for the past ten centuries. At various points during his life, Etrigan has belonged to a cast of rhyming demons, and could only communicate through rhyming verse. The reciting of a particular poem was required in order for Jason Blood to shift from human form into the form of Etrigan. Although the poem itself has gone through various changes over the years, it generally reads as follows:
- Change! Change,
- O' form of man.
- Release the might from fleshy mire.
- Boil the blood
- in the heart for fire.
- Gone! Gone! -- the form of man --
- Rise, the Demon Etrigan!
The reverse spell was "Gone, gone O Etrigan! Rise again (or once more) the form of man!" The spell itself did not need to be recited by Jason or Etrigan to be effective, merely within their range of hearing. In emergencies when Jason could not speak (such as one time when he was turned into a fly) writing it was sometimes sufficient to effect the change.
